Alvar Aalto

As one of the leading Finnish architects and designers of the 20th century, Aalto was renowned for his human-centred approach to modernism. His work spans architecture, furniture and glassware, bringing together functional design, natural materials and organic forms.

One of Thomas Scheibitz’s paintings brings a bold focal point to Stey Stavanger’s communal area, while two further works set the tone at the entrance.

Moving between abstraction and figuration, his graphic compositions invite a closer look without giving everything away. There’s a sense of curiosity in the work, adding another layer to the space and something new to discover each time you pass.

About the artist

Thomas Scheibitz
b. 1968, Radeberg, Germany
Lives and works in Berlin

Working from an ever-growing archive of art-historical reproductions, magazine pictures and his own photographs, he sketches, reworks and strips found images of their origins until they become neither depiction nor pure abstraction, but autonomous forms at once figure and sign. His pictures invite you to look for a story, then quietly refuse to give one. Depth turns into flat surface, and careful precision meets loose smears of paint.

Art you want to live with

At Stey, art and design aren’t just there to look good. They’re there to be lived with. We bring together considered design and art with character, creating spaces that feel personal rather than styled, more home than hotel. Nothing chosen just to match, and nothing that feels out of place. Just good things that grow on you the longer you stay.
